PASSION FOR THE ANDES

My passion for the Altiplano (the highlands), and the Andean world
began with an exploration trip that I made back in 1995 when I
published my photography artist book "Imgenes de las Alturas"
(Barreda, A., 1995.Torino, Italy). I had the opportunity to travel as an
artist and photograph the Andean landscapes in Argentina and Bolivia.
It was the first time in my life that I encountered such immensity, a
place where I felt so much peace, silence and stillness, as well as a
sense of infinite freedom - as if time had stopped.
The horizon seemed endless. A land surrounded by high peaks, salt
flats, small marshes, deep blue skies, no clouds, searing hot days and
crisp cold nights. Those night skies with more stars than I had ever
seen... Everything seemed so real, and at the same time so unreal.
It was within this vast, pristine, remote and magnificent environment
that I came across the vicunas, the Goddesses of the Andes, as well
as the alpacas, guanacos and llamas in the lower lands. I will always
remember this vivid image in which these creatures grazed peacefully

around me and I saw far away in the distance, a shepherd who was
taking care of her herd while she knitted.
This journey inspired me to learn more about the local communities
that live in this part of the world, their ancient and rich textile history,
the way they work with and weave these noble camelid fibers.
Textiles Andinos was created in 1999 and originates from this
expedition.
Initially I worked with textiles made from llama fiber woven in
traditional manual looms in the northern provinces of Salta and
Catamarca, Argentina. Back then I collaborated and worked closely on
the production of the textiles with several local weaver families,
especially with the Sandoval family from El Colte, Valle Calchaqui,
Salta. Hugo Sandoval was my star weaver.
It took us some time to get to know one another and get into rhythm...
especially for me, who needed to get immersed into their world.
After years of working together we naturally developed a very
special friendship. It was a unique and enriching adventure, a true
lifetime learning experience.
I predominantly worked on made -to- order textiles with clients
overseas, mostly in Europe. In Argentina I partnered with a renowned
interior designer and worked over a decade on the development of
numerous home collections for her projects.
I have always had this dream of working with alpaca and vicuna
fibers. The softness, sophistication and exquisiteness of textiles made
with these fibers is beyond the imaginable.

By 2012 I was able to start working with alpaca fibers in Peru.
I designed small-batch textile collections that were exhibited and sold
in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California. And while I developed my
textiles, I also started a touristic and agricultural entrepreneurship
called Finca Santana, in Cachi Adentro, Province of Salta, in the
Andes, North West of Argentina. Time is everything in order to do
things right, and because of the nature of this venture, Textiles
Andinos
had to be temporarily paused until now.

It is this year in 2021, in an ever more uncertain world, that I am
relaunching Textiles Andinos with the purpose of embracing my
friends and customers with my soft and noble alpaca textiles.

Inspired by Khalil Gibran's words, I am encouraged to open this new
chapter that brings us together

"...and what is it to work with love? It is to weave the cloth with threads
drawn from your heart, as if your beloved were to wear that cloth".
-The Prophet, Khalil Gibran
